Students create a shape poetry painting using descriptive language and landform illustrations. Students learn various art techniques, including shape poetry, watercolor resist, collage, and illustration. Students were struggling with their writing especially when it came down to descriptive language and the distinction between adjectives and verbs. By combining visual art and poetry, students were able to bring their words to “life” as well as provide a different way to engage with writing by illustrating first to inspire their words. Finally, with the use of magnetic words students were able to remove any blocks about spelling or sentence arrangement and were able to free flow with their writing, which allowed for more engagement as well as a deeper exploration of writing.
