Second graders explore English Language Arts and History-Social Sciences content through creative movement. Beginning with currency from students’ ancestors’ countries of origin, students analyze features on their currency, work collaboratively in duets to improvise a series of statues that depict these features, and reflect on questions they have about the currency. Students progress to reading stories from their ancestors’ countries and improvising gestural movements to depict the sequence of events within their story. Students write story summaries, identifying the key events that make up the beginning, middle, and end. They collaborate in trios to choreograph three-part dances of their story summaries, combining a variety of movements and receiving feedback to refine their work. In culmination, students share their dances with an invited audience of parents and peers.
